Interview with Marketing Wiz Jo-Anne Vandermeulen

Lynda W Yezak

AuthorCulture Blog with Lynda W. Yezak interviews Jo-Anne Vandermeulen

I'm super-excited to introduce special guest Jo-Anne Vandermeulen, who has recently helped me with a couple of marketing projects, and did so successfully! She's such an accomplished and inspiring entrepreneur, I thought our readers should meet her.

AC: You’re a writer, promoter, radio talk show host. Out of all the hats you wear, do you have a favorite?

JAV: No. To me, the different "hats" are like my choice of a favorite color…depending on the day, one may be more a favorite then the other. I call the three different roles my balance in life.

AC: How did you get into helping others promote their books?

JAV: When I was writing my first novel, I had read that marketing needs to happen even before publication date. Gosh, I was so scared to take this foreign path. In 2007, I began studying promotion and surprisingly, hit a passion in my life I had never imagined. The marketing content was so so cool that I just couldn’t keep it bottled . . . so, I began sharing the wealth of knowledge with others. With no expectations and completely unconditional in my "wants," the feedback began rolling in and I mean by the thousands! The responses fed my innate desire to help others (being a teacher for twenty years and a mother of two daughters) promote their books.

AC: What is the best, most effective marketing tool you have found?

JAV: My followers or fans are my most effective marketing tools. By myself, I could never bring so much exposure to my books. Actually, quite a rewarding and effective promotional tactic, "I’ll scratch your back, and it would be great if you could scratch mine." Simple and effective.

AC: How do you acquire these helpful friends?

JAV: It’s a toss-up between blogging and social networking. Blogging takes commitment to post regularly. The articles must supply content that is both valuable and unique, and written in a voice that rings true. The end goal is to attract huge targeted traffic or numbers of followers interested in your books.

Social Networking (my favorite social media site right now is Facebook). Again, having followers on Facebook takes a genuine and authentic voice—to gain trust in growing relationships.

AC: What is the primary mistake you see newbie authors making while marketing their books?

JAV: Hey, I can answer this one from experience…lol…The number one mistake newbies make when promoting their book is spending time bringing exposure to the wrong audience. Marketing is very time consuming so if the newbie is "barking up the wrong tree," not only are they wasting time where they could be pitching it to the "right" or targeted audience, but also they will not gain sales because no one is interested in their book.

I remember spending so much time with other writers, it just felt comfortable that I forgot to introduce myself to suspense/romance readers. Don’t get me wrong, this was not a waste of time as I learned a lot, but I did not get the sales I had hoped.

AC: Tell us about your first radio interview. Nervous?

JAV: To be honest, I wasn’t nervous, I was excited. I really missed teaching and professional speaking, so after researching blogtalkradio to death, I knew I was prepared and roaring to go.

AC: You’re changing the name of your show. What to, and why?

“Authors Articulating with Jo-Anne Vandermeulen” is now going to be called “Talk Radio Network." Change is seldom a bad move. I have been producing and hosting radio for two and a half years, seeing seventy-five archived shows, and I have over 12,000 active listeners with over 250,000 followers. I had done the show as gratis to authors and those in the writing field. It is time for me to expand my audience to include anyone who is selling products through the Internet. It matches the theme to my upcoming release Internet Marketing Made Easy (January 2nd, 2012), and it is time I receive payment for my time, effort, and experience.

AC: Internet Marketing Made Easy is now published. What can we hope to find between the covers?

JAV: Lots of user-friendly and valuable tips about marketing on the Internet.

Here’s my pitch:

Now you will be able to make a difference to your sales and *conquer all obstacles* "INTERNET MARKETING MADE EASY” will give you the knowledge to make the profits you deserve.

BRILLIANT!!!)

INTERNET MARKETING MADE EASY” – What are the Topics?

  • Getting Started: Creating a Following
  • Establishing a Voice (BLOGGING)
  • Advancing in the Search Engines
  • Jo-Anne’s Favorite Tips
  • Guaranteeing Massive Exposure (SOCIAL NETWORKING)
  • Creating a Platform (ATTRACTING CLIENTS)
  • Targeting your Audience (SAVING ENERGY)
  • Balancing Online Activities (MANAGING TIME)
  • Reaching Your Goal (SUCCESS HERE I COME!)

AC: What else is in the works for you?

JAV: I try and live my life as one day at a time. I strive for balance—work, play, and rest (and not always in that order), feeding myself: spiritually, intellectually, mentally, and physically. I listen to my needs or inner instincts and walk through doors that are open—doing the footwork of sudden and unplanned opportunities (kinda like this interview which will provide more exposure. I’m so grateful for this opportunity). I heed to obstacles that interfere with my chosen path and abruptly turn around and go down another road. So what is next for me is a question that can change answers on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. For example, today my agenda included this interview, a workout at the pool, a walk in the park with my mini-daschound—Oscar, answering emails while hanging out at an Internet CafĂ©, and I’m looking forward to a movie tonight while curled up in front of my fireplace. I’ve dedicated the month of December to "self"—a clean-up month of websites, computer hard-drives, and year-end income tax. Oh ya, and the launching of Internet Marketing Made Easy. To be honest, I haven’t got a clue what is in store for January or the 2012 year. If it is anything like the previous, I’ll just hold on tight and enjoy the ride.

AC: Where can our readers reach you?

JAV: The simple answer is to Google my name. I’m all over the place and love to interact with my readers.

AC: What services do you offer?

JAV: “Premium Promotional Services” *You Create – We Promote* offers these services:

Sharing My 2012 New Year’s Resolution

Do you make New Year’s resolutions?...and if yes, have you thought about yours yet?

What a strange Christmas and New Year’s season for me:

1st) CHRISTMAS - This is the first Christmas, in over a dozen years, I did NOT run...escaping to a white beach. Instead, I am staying home and have decided to ‘BE CHRISTMAS’. Sounds funny. Guess I kinda got tired of the Tellers asking me if I was ready for Christmas…lol. I do not ‘do’ the traditional Christmas with the presents; but, have always made my time and appreciated the giving of others’ time as the most AWESOME gift.

‘Being Christmas’ is easy and way-too-much FUN!...all I do is smile and spread JOY….now talk about rewarding!...just watch the expressions of the Tellers’ faces when they ask you if you’re ready for Christmas and you reply: “I am Christmas”.

2nd ) NEW YEARS - Perhaps not traveling and staying still has allowed me to jump ahead a tad—begin thinking of ‘ways of self-improvement’. Or the initial ‘Being Christmas’ idea, I played this month, got me thinking in advance about a 2012 New Year’s resolution. Again, it has been years since I’ve made a 2012 New Year’s resolution. Kinda proud of myself…lol…so just had to share…

My 2012 New Year’s Resolution:

I have faith, hope, and freedom to seek even more happiness, bask in the glory, and be the ambassador of joy.

How?

1.) HAPPINESS - Give Myself Permission - Take back my innate power I relinquished to others. I am and always will be the priority. (Aside: I cannot be there for others if I’m not fully present and able.)

2.) PEACE - Forgive Myself – Mistakes are inevitable as I am human, NOT God. I did what I thought was best at the time. (Aside: I cannot be there for others if I’m entwined in chaos, so be still, quiet and listen.)

3.) LOVELove Myself – Before giving love, I must must love myself. Enjoy the feeling. (Aside: I cannot give what I don’t have.)

4.) PROSPERITYGive – All is borrowed and never mine. Let go unconditionally—expect nothing in return. (Aside: I cannot focus on what is really important in life if I’m worshipping money and things.)

5.) HEALTHAttain Balance – Strive to achieve equal time in the areas of: spiritual, intellectual, physical, and mental wellbeing. (Aside: I cannot be happy without a balanced lifestyle).

Note: Being there for others is NOT giving away my innate power.

Are you able to ‘snag’ any ideas for your 2012 New Year’s resolution?
Go ahead and borrow any of mine

Shelley - Welcome, Jo-Anne, and thank you for agreeing to interview with us. Why don't we start off by hearing a little bit more about you. You use to be a teacher, how did you get into writing?

Jo-Anne - Thank you for having me...okay, here it goes...lol...
I taught for 20 years, then in April of 2006, I went in to see the Doctor. It was on a Wednesday, and that Friday, I was back in my classroom, packing-up all my teaching materials, never to return.

I was devastated! Really didn’t think I knew anything else, but to teach. I remember my counsellor trying to snap me out of my severe depressive state...she asked me what else I’ve always wanted to do. I chuckled and made a smug remark, “Well I’ve always wanted to write a book, but I’ve never had time”. She stopped, peering over her tiny spectacles, “Now you have time” .

And that’s how I got into writing. Lol...I remember sitting down to write my first book...I could barely sleep...I was so excited. Couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next...just like reading a real good book.

“Writing saved my life...literally...”

I actually completed my first 100,000 word (400 page) book in 17 days...although it never got published...lol...That novel, “On Guard” did get accepted by 3 different agents as a full submission (although rejected at the end)...AND I got to personally pitch it to the editor of Kensington Publishing where they wanted to read the full manuscript (although, again, was rejected).

I just ‘chalk-up’ “On Guard” as a study to the craft of novel writing...kinda like an education course.

Shelley - Can you tell us about the books you have published and the one that you are currently working on?

Jo-Anne - Sure...Since 2009, I have 2 published books. One is a suspense/romance (seeing ALL 5-star Amazon reviews...and there’s talk of turning this novel into a movie) called “Conquer All Obstacles”...the title is from the brand I created. The second is a non-fiction resource (user-friendly marketing tips) called “Premium Promotional Tips for Writers”. The one I’m working on is another non-fiction resource called “Internet Marketing Made Easy”. I have written this next book for a more general audience—for anyone who has products to sell online, including authors.

Here are short synopsises of each book:

1.)  Conquer All Obstacles” - A WOMAN WHO WANTS TO FIND LOVE ... WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES FOR A HAPPILY-EVER-AFTER ... EVEN TANGLING WITH A PSYCHOPATH ... YET, LOVE HAS THE POWER TO ... CONQUER ALL OBSTACLES. Middle-aged divorcee, Tara Robstead, wants more than a secret love affair with her boss, Josh Henderson. Yet, her search for a happily-ever-after costs her more than a price paid in blood-her soul is slaughtered.
(Available in most eBook formats and paperback) Purchase - http://bit.ly/cVE4A6

2.) “Premium Promotional Tips for Writers” - A "must-have" resource book filled with practical online marketing tips for those with books or other products to sell. Although this book was written for writers, these promotional tips can be applied to any products you may wish to promote via the Internet. You will learn how to target your audience, create massive exposure, and drive traffic back to the site where your books or other products are sold.
(Available in most eBook formats and paperback) Purchase - http://bit.ly/8X3xtX

3.)   “Internet Marketing Made Easy” – Contents include:

  • GLOSSARY – Definitions
(Available in most eBook formats and paperback) – Available Soon

Shelley - You published with The Laurus Company, can you tell us a little bit about them, how you found them, and why you chose to publish with them?

Jo-Anne - I discovered Nancy Williams online. Like my business partner, Brian Knight. Oh, and like my second husband...let’s just say,

“The Internet is where I meet folks...lol...”

Nancy Williams founded and manages The LaurusCompany. She is a gem!

I chose Nancy because I knew I could trust her. I also represented a client who had her as an editor and publisher and I chatted with him about her professionalism. After hearing his rave remarks and reading his book (while seeing the awesome quality), I knew I had my editor, cover designer, and publisher. Nancy and I work as a team. Have mutual respect for each other.

Shelley - I noticed on your blog that you paid to have someone else convert your books into eBooks. Can you tell us a little bit about the gentleman that you chose to work with, and why you made that decision?

Jo-Anne - I had Joshua Tallent convert my physical books into eBooks. He’s the best!...a tad expensive, but I figure you usually get what you pay for, and I wanted quality. It was a good thing I had him too...because, there were some formatting snags with Smashwords...and thank goodness, I didn’t have to do a thing. Joshua did it all! I like not having that extra stress....lol...

“He made sure everything was perfect.”

Before choosing Joshua, I did a lot of research on him. I then had him as a guest blogger where I conducted an interview.  After the blog interview, I then had Joshua as a Special Guest on my radio show “Authors Articulating”. After all of this, I knew I had chosen the right man for the job.

Shelley - You are both an author and an internet marketer, what are some of your favorite parts to each job? Do you have a favorite thing that you get to do with one or both of them?

Jo-Anne – Writing gives me a feeling of total escape from reality...lol...okay, now I’m really sounding crazy...lol...well, you know what I mean.

“As an author, I like the freedom of creativity.”

As an Internet Marketer, I take my job seriously. I view the Internet Marketing work as mental exercise...sort of like a physical work-out, except with the brain. I need that. My mental illness (which the Doctors had first diagnosed me with early Alzheimer’s) requires constant exercise. I joke around with others by saying that a holiday turns my brains to mush...well, to be honest, it is not too far from the truth.

“As an Internet Marketer, I enjoy the mental challenge.”

My favourite thing I get to do being both an author and an Internet Marketer is the opportunity to meet other fascinating people. I love learning! And...

“My biggest thrill is helping or supporting other fellow writers and marketers.”

To me, this is how I measure success.

Shelley - You have said on more than one occasion that marketing starts before your book is published and released. At what point would you recommend that authors get themselves out there, and where should they start?

Jo-Anne - I truly believe what John Kremer states:

“Marketing should start when you have the idea of writing a book or selling a product”.

It takes time to build a following. Developing a platform, that stands out from the rest, takes fine-tuning and will happen with the more energy you put forth.

“The first thing you need to do is start a blog.”

There are free user-friendly platforms available. I have my blogs on both wordpress and blogger. Blogger is easier to function if you’re a newbie. When blogging, you need to think of your area of expertise or niche.

“When you write articles about your passion, it is simple.”

If you are only writing for your audience, then you will probably run into writer’s block and it will seem like a chore. Hopefully, you can connect your niche with your book or the product you’re selling. It is important to supply content the viewer can take. This will generate traffic to your site and will entice the reader to come back for more. Oh, and make sure you have your book or product on the sidebar with a clear purchase link. This is where you’ll make your sales.

“You must be proactive.”

Having a blog just sit there isn’t going to cut-it. Now you must head out into the Social Media Networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Goodreads. Share your expertise, meet potential buyers, and leave your signature (with the link back to your blog) where ever you go.

Give, give, and give some more.

..don’t worry about the amount of time or energy this involves...trust me, it will open the doors for more opportunities and eventually the success you’re striving for.

“Be patient and persevere.”

Shelley - Jo-Anne, thank you again for taking time out of your busy schedule to interview with us, and for sharing your wealth of knowledge and experience. In closing, can you tell our readers where to find you on the web?

Jo-Anne - Oh, you are more than welcome!  I thank you for giving me the opportunity to share the wealth of knowledge with others.

Lol...to find me?...just Google my name: Jo-Anne Vandermeulen...I’m all over the place...lol...

Tips on Creating an Author Presence and Blogging -- Interview with author, Jo-Anne Vandermeulen

My interview today is with Jo-Anne Vandermeulen who is an expert blogger and one who is willing to offer free marketing tips to other bloggers. She is also the producer and hostess of “Authors Articulating” on Blogtalkradio. And if that is not enough, she is also the founder and marketer of the online marketing business “Premium Promotional Services.” So let’s get on with it and get some of her tips!
After you published your novel, Conquer All Obstacles, you started writing a book on tips for writers which became Premium Promotional Tips for Writers. Why did you think you could write a book on helping other authors after writing just that one book?

Great question...I knew Premium Promotional Tips for Writers would make a great resource book from reading all the comments from my ‘suddenly’ HUGE following. In less than 3 months, I had over 100,000 followers and my daily blog hits were averaging around 200 a day. With this massive traffic, there were many comments about the same request...they wanted to read more marketing tips and would love to read these tips in a resource book. I knew this book was in demand from the many requested comments.

What type of response have you gotten from your readers?

Around 98% of the readers left 5-Star reviews with amazing comments of how much this book helped them conquer their online marketing feat. They felt inspired and encouraged to tackle the once daunting task of having to market themselves. They were impressed that the tips were user-friendly and all free. They learned another avenue of writing they never even knew existed...and many now enjoy online marketing.

How did you get started in writing the Tips book? Did you just use your own experiences for the book or did you draw from other writers as well?

I first read blog posts from other online marketing experts. Soon, I discovered a passion for the content. I started my first blog in October 2008 titled ‘Conquer All Obstacles – Professional Support Network for Writers’. Initially, I wrote posts about writing techniques; but by December 2008, my new passion took over and I wrote about all the incredible information I was reading from these online marketing experts.

I not only wrote about the ‘how to’ market; but also, (being a teacher for 20 years) was able to condense this somewhat technical information into user-friendly morsels of valuable content that my fellow writers could simply implement—a unique online marketing resource book different from the other self-help books for authors.

One of the concepts that I like is that you tell writers to start marketing their book before it is even published. Why do you think that is important?

Basically, I knew I had to create an author platform even before my first book was published so I took all that I read and shared the knowledge with others. There are 2 main reasons why it is important for an author to market even before the book is published:
1.) It takes time to generate an online presence.
2.) The marketing focus should be on the author first and then the book.

How do you define the term creating a buzz?

Creating a buzz is generating talk among others. I call this viral promotion—a VERY powerful method for online marketing. Basically, I compare viral promotion to a snowball rolling down a hill. Once the author starts to make an online presence and shows they have valuable content for others to explore, these new followers will be excited to share this information with others—the snowball has now started down the hill...and as more and more people read about this amazing content and where they can find even more, they will then tell even more folks...these folks will tell others, etc—now the snowball is building—growing bigger and bigger, faster and faster. Soon, the author (with the appreciated help of his/her followers) will have created a buzz throughout the Internet.

One of book segments is called “targeting mountains instead of molehills.” Could you explain that concept?

Targeting mountains instead of molehills refers to the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) graph. Whenever an author has a blog, he/she needs to register in the 3 top Search Engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN). After he/she publishes a post or article, it is very important for them to ‘ping’ their post by sharing the highlight of the content and a functioning link with the webcrawlers or social bookmark networks such as Digg, Delicious, Reddit, Stumbleupon, etc.

Finally, with this post, the author should list keywords (including their name, the name of the post, and the title of their book) as tags. The webcrawlers from the Search Engines will then be able to snag on to your tags, content, and link, submitting them into the Search Engines. With more posts and more pertinent tags, soon your blog will elevate higher and higher in the Search Engines—the SEO graph will be spiked like a mountain. People who are searching for you, your book title, or even the subject/topic will now be able to find you without having to scroll through pages and pages in the Search Engines. Can you imagine being on the first page of Google? ...talk about massive exposure because now you are easily found.”

For someone who is new to blogging, what should be the first steps they should take to formulating their blog?

Keep it simple. Abolish ALL fears of doing things wrong or making a mistake. Write about your passion. For free, choose a template (design) from Blogger.com . Explore the dashboard or skeleton of your new blog. Go ahead and add a short article. View your creation and then edit from there. Once you’re happy with the appearance and post, click publish. That’s it!

Trust me, you’ll be surprised how simple blogging really is....and like most ‘things’ in life, your posts will become better and better with more experience...and with this building confidence, you’ll find yourself ready to modify your blog to make the entire appearance custom designed just right for you...your voice will ring true and your readers will begin to flock.

In your book you say you need to provide great content. That might scare some bloggers off in thinking they need to spend hours on end creating posts. Could you explain what you mean by that?

Creating great or valuable content is publishing articles with information your readers can use. What would bring a new reader back to your blog?
If you’re writing about your passion, there shouldn’t be any writer’s block. Again, keep it simple and write 2-4 paragraphs per post. Edit after.

How important is it to be techno-savvy in designing a blog?

With the right attitude, even a beginner with no tech background can learn as they go and have their own blog. They don’t have to design it if they grab a free blogger.com template...everything is done for you!

I guess that’s why most of my book ‘Premium Promotional Tips for Writers’ is written with the ‘voice’ of inspiration and encouragement. I wanted my readers to feel confident. I use my own experiences as being a new marketer and the tips as a reflection of how I conquered the tech terminology. I then turned what I learned into user-friendly online marketing tips for them. I wanted my readers to know that if I can do it, they can do it too. I really didn’t want to keep anything inside. I keep no secrets. Honestly, I measure my success when I know I can share the wealth of knowledge and help others.

What other books do you have in process now?

I have another Marketing Tips book that is at the Editors. Just today, She wrote saying that I should be expecting the first draft proof very soon...YIPPEE!!!...I cannot wait!...lol...

This Online Marketing Tip Book is written for authors and anyone who has products to sell online. I’ve learned to expand my audience—I can help authors and other people who need help marketing themselves and their products.
Is Laurus strictly a subsidiary press? Did you self-publish? For others considering the self-publish route (if that is what you did), how much money should they expect to invest in getting their book published and successfully marketed?

“The Laurus Company is a full-service publisher and can meet all of your publishing needs, from substantive editorial and design, to Print-On-Demand (POD), to listings in wholesale catalogues, to distribution and fulfillment services from their online retail bookstore. The Laurus Company currently publishes under three imprints: Laurus Books for non-fiction, Marbry Books for fiction, and Marbry-Tudor Books for specialty books and publications.

In addition to the U.S. market, books from The Laurus Company are also available in over 100 countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom, the countries of the European Union, Spain, Australia, and the new Espresso Book Machine®.  E-books are available in markets worldwide.

The Laurus Company maintains an online bookstore <http://www.thelauruscompany.com/store>  where authors and books are advertised and books can be ordered for direct retail shipment to consumers. This is a great convenience for authors who want to market their books themselves without the hassles of setting up their own shopping cart and fulfilling orders. Book sales through The Laurus Company online bookstore generate the highest royalties for our authors.
Although The Laurus Company is not a speculative publisher, Laurus authors are not considered to be self-published, which opens the door to many avenues that are closed to self-published authors. Our publishing costs are determined by page count and are among the most economical resources available. Editing and design costs are determined by the level of need and are agreed upon in advance. Authors always have a voice at The Laurus Company. Our mission is to keep authors from getting lost or becoming prey in the unfamiliar world of book publishing.”

“Thank you, Chris, for giving me the chance to share with your audience. I welcome all to interact and comment.” >Hugs< Jo
