Welcome to the ‘Lit Chick’ Corner! (That is, ‘Literary Chick’). As a Sydney-based novelist, I’ve decided to create a regular forum in which I interview authors or highlight their work. In my interactions as a writer, I meet all sorts of wonderful colleagues from around the world and I would like to dedicate the ‘Lit Chick’ Corner to all the hardworking, and often unrewarded, authors out there. So, be it fiction or non-fiction, my aim is to introduce the reader to some of the writing that is available outside of the traditional publishing arena. I hope you enjoy! >Sylvia Massara<
By the way, keep an eye out for the soon-to-be launched “The Lit Chick Show” - a blog that will be run as a virtual TV show, featuring video and written commentary on authors around the world and their work. The Lit Chick Show is due for launch in late September, 2010.
Part 1 of my interview with the dynamic Canadian author and radio host Jo-Anne Vandermeulen. Today, I am featuring Part 2 of the interview.
A little bit about Jo-Anne:
Jo-Anne Vandermeulen is a Canadian writer, and an inspiration to us all. With two books out, including a novel, Jo-Anne has overcome her own obstacles to follow her dreams.
An English major, graduated from the University of Saskatchewan, she had to give up teaching when she was diagnosed with an illness that forced her to get out of the classroom. Now, with the novel Conquer all Obstacles, and the non-fiction book Promotional Tips for Writers, Jo-Anne is an inspiration for many readers.
Additionally, Jo-Anne produces and hosts a weekly live radio show on Blog Talk Radio (BTR), entitled, “Authors Articulating,” where she shares marketing and promotional tips with other writers and answers questions from her extensive and ever-growing list of followers. Further, she is the owner of Premium Promotional Services, a company that supports and markets fellow writers.
‘Conquer All Obstacles’ was released in November, 2009, and ‘Premium Promotional Tips for Writers’, was released in December, 2009.
Jo-Anne has two grown daughters, and resides in Courtenay, British Columbia, with her mini-dachshund, Oscar.
Sylvia: Hi Jo, last week we talked about your work of fiction, Conquer All Obstacles. Today, I want focus more on your non-fiction book and general aspects of what you’re up to. So please tell me more about Premium Promotional Tips for Writers.
Jo-Anne: My latest release, “Premium Promotional Tips for Writers”, is a resource book filled with practical ideas authors can implement into their marketing plan.
These days, even if you’ve been published through the traditional channels, authors need to know how to promote their work - that is, unless you are lucky enough to be a celebrity author in the same league with Dan Brown, JK Rowling, Stephen King, etc.
But they are the exception to the rule, and I knew I had to begin my author platform and learn more about self-marketing. So I read, and read, and read some more.
Just over a year ago, I didn’t even know what a blog was…or a widget for that matter.
But, taking all that I learned, I created posts in a blog. Soon, the feedback from writers streamed forth. Authors were asking to hire me for my promotional services, guest posts, author interviews, blog guest, and others had tagged me with the new title ‘ The Blogging Expert’. I submitted ‘marketing tip’ articles in various virtual and physical magazines, social media sites, newsletters, blogs, digests; and magazines have featured my author platform. The list of these great opportunities goes on… For me, supporting writers came naturally.
I had been a teacher and coach for 20 years, so helping others in an area of my recently found passion became a huge boost of inner joy. The appreciation from these new friends were endless. Relationships grew and these acquaintances instantly became my following.
The accumulation of these blog tips became my first edition to “Premium Promotional Tips for Writers”, and I started to get some great reviews as per the one below:
“If you are spinning at the thought of promoting your book or product or service, this book will plant your feet on the ground and point you in the right direction. The ideas here apply to everyone with a product or service to market.” - Katherine Kane - 5-Star Amazon Review
With a second edition close at hand, and as I continue writing posts, my audience has expanded from writers to general entrepreneurs. See how the doors keep opening? See how all we have to do is walk through and not fear the unknown?
For many, fear is a huge obstacle to overcome. Throughout “Premium Promotional Tips for Writers” I encourage the reader to conquer these obstacles, yet my approach is gentle—inspirational.
I share marketing tips that I’ve used and know they work. Teaching or instructing individuals is what I do best…so, taking all that I’ve learned, I can present the ideas in a variety of ways to meet the diverse learning styles of each individual.
In the end, I figured that if I can conquer all obstacles, so can YOU!
Today I choose to be all that I can. I will listen to my body and consciously create balance in my life. I will keep my ‘eyes’ open for opportunities and will have the courage to walk through each door.
My motto: “Persevere and persist as if there shall be no tomorrow”.
Sylvia: Beautifully put, Jo, and let me say that I’ve taken a page from your book and am conquering my own obstacles. Thank you for being such an inspiration and I look forward to featuring you on the upcoming Lit Chick Show.
Jo-Anne: Thank you, Sylvia. I can’t wait till you launch the Show. I will get my video interview ready :-)
